Social Transformation Through Advocacy and Reforms (STAR)

Objectives

     Social Transformation Through Advocacy and Reforms (STAR), the Advocacy Committee of the University, is created to facilitate, coordinate, and intensify all initiatives related to Advocacy. STAR takes an active role of initializing efforts that will awaken and motivate the academic sectors to help in the process of social development through Advocacy and Reforms. As a committee, STAR shall focus on advocacy works, i.e., justice and peace concerns, in accordance with the LSGP – Social Development and the Social Teachings of the Church. Specifically, STAR shall ensure a more unified and coordinated implementation of advocacy works of the different members of the academe, including both internal and external activities.

     STAR is composed of representatives of identified offices and sectors of the academic community (core group) and is under the direct supervision of the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Academic and Research, being the Honorary Chair. The committee aims to help bring forth social development through:

a. increasing awareness and deeper understanding of social realities;
b. responding to varied social issues;
c. working in solidarity with people and institutions.

Rationale

The Guiding Principles for the Philippine Lasallian Family (LSGP) on Education, states that the educational process should be transformative, and should develop members who can contribute to the realization of God’s Kingdom of truth, justice, love and peace. In order to realize this mission, the lay partners (members of the Academe) seek the Kingdom of God through self propelled, individual, collective or institutional actions in the light of human realities, meaningfully participating in social, economic and political affairs for the good of all.

This dignified mission is the challenge that members of the Academic Community have been seriously working on for its full realization through the setting up of necessary structures, formulation of policies and the implementation of programs and activities. On the other hand, a much bigger response is still to be fully realized: to heighten efforts on providing venues and opportunities for members of the academic community to participate in life affirming initiatives and actions that respond to social realities, most specifically, being in solidarity with those who are in need. Basic of this process is awareness and deepened understanding of human realities to all members of the academe. This will propel realization of God’s Kingdom by inspiring and moving the members of the academe to take active roles in the process of reforming one’s self and transforming the society.
