Language Proficiency Program for Foreign Students

Foreign students, mostly Asian nationals, who wish to apply for admission are required to consult with the Registrar’s Office regarding requirements of the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation (BID) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Permanent aliens should present a verified Alien Certificate of Registration (ACR).

Upon completion of the documents required by the Registrar’s Office, they shall be advised to take the English Proficiency Test (EPT) to gauge their communicative needs.

In the course of the program, the center through the assigned language specialists who are experts in the English Proficiency Program (EPP) shall determine who among the foreign students are ready for the post English Proficiency Test. The successful students shall then be recommended to take the College Entrance Test should they wish to enroll in a particular curricular program offered by the institution.

Finally, the foreign students after passing the entrance examination shall follow the usual enrollment procedure outlined for incoming students in Section 3 of the Student Handbook.

Program of study

Intensive English (ENGL100)

This is a 30-hour elementary level training program on English language’s phonology, morphology, vocabulary, and syntax.  By the end of the program, the students should have developed comprehension of and accuracy in using basic English language thereby allowing them to engage in minimal yet purposeful interactions across the five macro-skills.

English Communication Skills (ENGL101)

This is a 30-hour intermediate level training program on the use of English language in defined written and spoken discourses.  By the end of the program, the students should have applied basic English language with accuracy and fluency to specific discourses.

III.  Time frame and training program’s inclusions

The program of study could be feasibly completed in two weeks (10 days) spread during weekdays (Monday-Friday) from 900 to 1200 and 1300 to 1600.  All sessions shall be held at air conditioned discussion rooms.  Students shall be housed at the University dormitory.  Faculty members could serve as host families to students for strategic assimilation of the language.

IV.  Materials

During the course of study, a range of authentic materials shall be used in order to develop students’ accuracy and fluency in the use of English language.  These materials are graded, tried out, and tested such that they are capable of revealing students’ language requirements and successes in learning the target language.  All materials are premised on an orientation of the English language across the five macro-skills: reading; writing; listening; speaking; and grammar.

V.  Success indicators

Assessment and evaluation shall be carried out through use of pre and posttests at the start, during, and by the end of each of the included programs.  The processes undertaken and successes in going through the program shall be physically manifested in the production of tourism and/or advocacy materials for foreigners intending to come to the Philippines.
