DLSU-D gives tribute to outgoing EVP

De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) honored outgoing Executive Vice President (EVP) Dr. Herminia Torres at the Museum Complex on May 12 for her nine years of service that brought gradual yet amazing improvements to the university. Dr. Ambrosio Capayas, former senior adviser to the EVP, could not have described Dr. Torres’ term any better “…it’s leadership at its height, characterized with presence that inspires, disciplinary measures sound and proper, motherliness with firmness, integrity in action, humility at its best and dedication at its peak.”

The two-hour tribute featured presentations from the different sectors of the academic community. Host Dr. Lakandupil Garcia read poetic citations as an audiovisual presentation of Dr. Torres’ life and love unfolded. Administrators entertained the crowd with an impromptu choral rendition of Through the Years and Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko. The Faculty Association, on the other hand, awarded her with a plaque of appreciation citing her unwavering support for the association.

In her response, Dr. Torres said that “she came at the right time at the right place and was fortunate to have worked with the right people.” In a separate interview, she even described her stay in DLSU-D as “the greatest performance of her life.”

Since 1995, Dr. Torres has accomplished significant developments for the university. Among other things, she will leave a legacy of structural improvements and academic achievements. Old buildings have been reconstructed and new structures have been built, the latest being the Grandstand, Business Administration Building and the Waling-waling dormitory.

She will also be remembered for her one-discipline-one department policy, which raised a lot of eyebrows during its initial implementation but eventually became well accepted and commended.

Under her leadership, the colleges of Business Administration, Education, Liberal Arts and Science were granted level III accreditation status by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities in 2003. In the same year, the university was granted deregulated status by the Commission on Higher Education for the outstanding overall performance of its graduates in the different licensure examinations. It is also during her term that the university was recognized as a Center of Development and Excellence in Information Technology in Region IV.

While Dr. Torres’s term as EVP comes to an end, the atmosphere during the tribute proved that she will always be remembered and greatly appreciated by the academic community, securing her a soft spot in their hearts.
