On Professionalism The administration was deeply disheartened when a member of the faculty was involved in an incident that put the university in a bad light. What saddened us even more was that the incident was covered by the media and was shown on national TV. According to the report, the said faculty was charged with extortion by his students in a tutorial class. As an administrative move, the concerned faculty member was placed under preventive suspension beginning September 22. This was decided to avoid further talks about the incident and to protect him from prejudices and ridicule. We should remember that we have to reserve judgment until proper investigation proves him guilty or otherwise. The faculty member was given an opportunity to submit a written explanation of the incident. He will further be provided venue to defend himself in an investigation to be facilitated by a College Grievance Committee. The committee will decide on the case based on the merit of the presented evidences and in accordance with the Faculty Manual. We regret such an incident had to happen. If only sufficient evidence had been received to initiate an investigation prior to the entrapment and the media coverage, we are certain that an appropriate action would have been done. But since the matter went beyond our control, we have to follow university protocol to proceed with the case so that due process may be given and justice may be served. We strongly hope that this unfortunate happening will serve as a lesson for us educators to observe proper work ethics, so that we will not find ourselves in complicated situations that we will later on regret. Once again, let us be reminded of professionalism and the values that our founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle has instilled in us. |
