8th UNIGAMES opens with a blast
The
early morning rain did not dampen the opening
ceremonies of the 8th UNIGAMES, October 22 at the
DLSU-D Grandstand.
The ceremonies
began with a mass at the Immaculate
Concepcion Parish Church. This was followed by a parade
around the DLSU-D track oval. Participating athletes were
led by marching bands and drum and lyre ensembles from
Cavite. Fireworks erupted followed by enthusiastic
applause from the audience as each participating school
was announced. Also, the crowd was dazzled by the
Dasmariñas Elementary School Drum and Lyre Band with
their version of the popular spaghetti dance.
Following
the parade, Rev. Fr. Edwin Tibayan, DLSU-D
Chaplain started the ceremonies with a reading from the
Book of Paul. DLSU-Ds Chorale gave a dramatic rendition
of the Lupang Hinirang. EVP Dr. Herminia D. Torres,
delivered the welcome remarks.
The event
was graced by Philippine Sports Commissioner
William Ramirez, who in his inspirational talk, urged the
athletes to adhere to the oath of sportsmanship. Br. Roly
Dizon, FSC, founder of the UNIGAMES and presently
chairman of the Commission on Higher Education expressed
his elation at the big turnout of delegates. Governor Erineo
Maliksi also welcomed the athletes to the province of
Cavite. Br. Andrew Gonzales, FSC, Presidential Adviser for
Academics and Research of the DLSU System also gave an
inspirational message.
The highlight
of the morning was the lighting of the
symbolic UNIGAMES torch and the raising of the flags led
by UNIGAMES Committee Chair Jose Legaspi. Then, a loud
cheer arose when Dr. Torres announced that the
UNIGAMES was officially on.
