DLSU-D students win regional search for outstanding accounting students

Reineer Dominguez and Conrado Lejana, BS Accountancy students, placed 11th and 15th respectively, among 160 contestants in the regional “Search for Outstanding Accounting Students” held at De La Salle Lipa, October 26.

Then, together with Sarah Mei Javalera, they won first place in the team competition elimination round. The competition consisted of written examination on subjects such as: financial accounting, management accounting, business law, taxation, management, marketing, economics, finance, information technology and current events.

Their combined individual and team scores landed the university a place among the top 10 performing schools besting 60 other participating schools. This victory makes it the third time in four years that DLSU-D students excelled in this competition.
The three students will represent the region in the national grand finals to be held at the Asian Institute of Management Conference Center in Makati City, December 2.

Arrogante authors first humanities book in Filipino

In took nine months to finish. Finally, in September, Jose A. Arrogante, Languages faculty and prolific writer of Filipino textbooks, was ready to launch “Pagpapahalagang Sining sa Filipino (Pinta at Literatura, Sayaw at Musika, atb….)”, the first humanities book written in Filipino.

The book was born of his desire to make the arts – “sining”, more accessible to a wider audience of Filipino students and readers. Arrogante believes that appreciation of the arts is an “emotional process. Mas makakadama ng pagpapahalaga kung ito ay maipapaliwanag sa wikang malapit sa kanilang damdamin, ang wika ng kanilang katutubong pandama.”

Arrogante also hopes to standardize the use of Filipino as a medium in teaching humanities subjects. English art terminologies now have their Filipino counterparts that teachers can use in class. The book features comprehensive discussions and information on the elements and forms of art, pivotal periods in art, among others.

The book, published by National Bookstore, is already available nationwide.

CIH on the Move fast tracks jubilee

MIn celebration of DLSU-D at 25, the College of International Hospitality Management (CIH) will present “CIH on the Move”, November 13 to December 5. This is the first time the college will sponsor university-wide activities since it was made independent from the College of Business Administration.

According to Mr. Jefferson Buenviaje, CIH student council adviser and project coordinator, “We have adopted the slogan, ‘It has never been this big!’ Every week, there will be surprises for the community. This is also our way of showing the significant developments that happened to our college. We seem to be moving at a fast rate, hence our logo for this event – the race track oval.”

The event kicks off with “CIH on Parade.” CIH students will parade wearing costumes depicting future professions in the hospitality industry. Likewise, everyone will be invited to join coffee concoction and cake decorating contests; seminars given by industry professionals on flower arrangement and cocktail mixing seminars, among others.

As part of the event, an exhibit on landmark tourist destinations in Cavite dubbed “The First Cavite Tourism Expo 2002” will also be unveiled. The CIH students’ organization “Tourismo Lasalleño” will also be launched. To cap off the event, a musical jamboree featuring guest celebrities and CIH students will also be held.
