Torres receives UST Diamond award

Executive Vice President Dr. Herminia Torres was given the Diamond Award by the the University of Santo Tomas, College of Education on February 23. The ceremonies took place at the Arch of the Centuries (UST) during the alumni homecoming of the college, part of the celebration of its 75th foundation anniversary.

Dr. Torres received a medal for having contributed to the fulfillment of UST’s vision-mission, for having cultivated Christian and Filipino values, and living to the ideals of a Thomasian in her chosen field of specialization, and in her person.

Other Lasallian Diamond Awardees were Presentacion Gabriel, Executive Director of the DLSU System Secretariat, and Maria Luisa Lacson, director of the Brother Andelino Manuel Castillo, FSC Religious Educational Foundation, Inc.
The celebration was themed “Education at 75: Cut to Perfection.”


Indon prof lectures at DLSU-D

Prof. Harry Tjahjono, chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering of Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University in Surabaya, Indonesia visited DLSU-D for a lecture series on Feb. 18-23. Tjahjono lectured on ergonomics, operation scheduling, production planning/control, and inventory control in different venues.

For its part, DLSU-D is sending COT faculty Socorro Bunda for a lecture series in Indonesia in April this year.


NIPS director talks on political parties

Atty. Jose Luis Martin Gascon, executive director of the National Institute for Policy Studies (NIPS), enlightened political science students and social sciences faculty by presenting the status and role of, and challenges to Philippine political parties in the lecture, “Philippine Political Parties,” February 22, at the Alumni Auditorium.

NIPS is tasked with administration, development and implementation of programs for a medium-sized political institute involving research, policy-formation, training, networking and advocacy in areas of political and electoral reforms, civic education, peace and human rights, and social justice.

The speaker also donated political science books for use by political science majors. They were received by Bernard Esternon, chair of the Social Sciences department, and will be turned over to Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo.

The lecture was sponsored by the University Student Council, Political Science Program Council and the Planning and Development Office.


BeSD celebrates “Mental Health Awareness Week”

The Behavioral Sciences Department in cooperation with the AB Psychology Program Council spearheaded the observance of “Mental Health Awareness Week,” February 26 to March 2. The celebration was dubbed “Life Management Towards Mental Health: A Healthy Mind for a Healthy Life.” One of its highlights was a symposium titled “What Men Really Say About Women,” on March 1, 8:30-10:00, at the Alumni Auditorium.
Other activities were: a thanksgiving mass, parade, film viewing, talk show, lecture series, and a community mental health outreach.
