Masagca paper describes
education in global age

Teaching and learning in the global age can be described as a kind of ecosystem in which information is transformed into knowledge. This is the hypothesis presented by Dr. Jimmy Masagca in his paper “Ecology of Teaching and School Management in the Era of Globalization,” read in the 5th National Research Forum on Jan.30-Feb. 1 at the Department of Agriculture Auditorium in Diliman.

Masagca’s paper also scans the various components of teaching and school management, and explains how classroom “architecture” and low resource colleges are being reformed in response to global forces and rapid advances in information and communication technology (ICT).

Masagca recommends the promotion of “Science Shops” concept that allows universities to make their research resources available to local communities and groups to help nurture a culture of research.

In the same forum, Masagca also presented “Fish Chromosomes: Their use in Cytotaxonomy and Genotoxic Testing,” a paper that discusses the use of fish chromosomes in classifying a group of fishes, and as possible biomarkers in genotoxic testing.

Art Month at Museo
SLAM monthly meeting; Poesia; Fr. Blanco’s flowers on exhibit

Museo De La Salle played host to the monthly meeting of Southern Luzon Association of Museums (SLAM) at the onset of Art Month, February 4.

Thirty-five participants including curators and directors from different museums and cultural institutions in the Southern Luzon Region attended the meeting.
They discussed fund raising projects, including publishing a coffeetable book on Southern Luzon cuisines. For its part, Museo De La Salle was also tasked to initiate a series of seminars/lectures on preserving cultural artifacts.

SLAM was created by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ Committee on Museums.
Poems and songs of love from Britain and the Philippines were rendered in an afternoon of cakes and coffee, as Museo De La Salle, for the third time, sponsored and hosted Poesia at the museum azotea on February 14. The event was held in cooperation with the Languages Department and the British Council.

Also ongoing is an exhibit of botanical plates by 19th century artists compiled by Fr. Manuel Blanco, OSA. The exhibit, titled “Floral Feast: Selected Plates from Fr. Manuel Blanco’s Flora de Filipinas,” features reproductions from the limited volumes reprinted to commemorate the 110th anniversary of its publication in 1883-1887. An outreach program of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, the exhibit runs up to March 31 at the Function Room of Museo De La Salle.

(Museo De La Salle is also conducting an oil painting workshop in April. For details, you may call up local 3151.)

Lasallian Family prepares for Convocation 2003

Representatives of various sectors from DLSU-D, DLSU-Health Sciences Campus, DLS-Lipa and other La Salle-supervised schools in Cavite, Laguna and Batangas met up in the First CaLaBa Regional Reflection Council (RRC) Meeting at Charles Huang Conference Center, Feb. 15-17. This, in preparation for the Philippine Lasallian Family Convocation set in 2003.

The 2003 Convocation is a “strategic planning exercise” that will evaluate the first phase of the Lasallian Ministry Action Plan and determine new courses of action for the Lasallian Family. It can be recalled that during the First Lasallian District Synod in 1999, La Salle schools all over the country were tasked to implement an action plan that reaffirms the commitment of La Salle schools to the poor and youth at risk. The action plan is to be implemented up to year 2011.

Br. Ray Suplido, FSC, director of the Lasallian Animation and Formation Team, was overall facilitator of the CaLaBa RRC Meeting. Outputs of the meeting will be submitted to the Preparatory Commission for the 2003 Convocation.
