| DLSU-D hosts AFAP The Kagawaran ng Filipino at Panitikan hosts the seventeenth year of the Advanced Filipino Abroad Program (AFAP) from June 14 to Aug. 2. This summer program has been designed to provide American students with the opportunity to learn advanced Filipino language in a Philippine setting by way of short term total immersion scheme at the DLSU-D campus. This is the University’s first year to host the whole program. AFAP opened at the Tanghalang Julian Felipe with Vice Chancellor for Academics and Research Veronidia de Leon welcoming the Fulbright scholars and US directors. AFAP aims to provide intensive and specialized instructions in Filipino within its natural, cultural, and social context. Participants were nationally selected to supplement their two courses taken in different US institutions and to attain high level of proficiency within the seven-week program in the Philippines. This year’s multi-disciplinal batch of Fulbright scholars are Jason Agar, Environmental Studies student from the City College of San Francisco; Michaela Mae Angeles, Sociology student from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Edwin Cruz, Economics student from the University of California-Los Angeles; Mary Rose De La Cruz, Pre-Nursing student with a minor in Filipino from the University of Hawaii-Manoa; Michael Gonzalez, Architecture student from the UC Berkeley; Jensine Isip, Economics and International Studies student from the University of Washington; Jodel Lanzaderas, Accounting student with a minor in Filipino from the University of Hawaii-Manoa; Allan Lumba, History student from the University of Washington; Janelle Mendiola, Psychology student from the City College of San Francisco; Matthew Nicdao, English student from the University of Washington; Charity Ramilo, Bilingual Education student from San Francisco State University; and Roderica Tuyay, International Business/Finance student from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. The immersion program exposes the learners to native speakers in structured and non-structured learning situations on themes like Katutubong Buhay ng Cavite at Edukasyon, Literatura at Sining Pantanghalan, Kasaysayan at Relihiyon (Islam), Ekonomiya at Globalisasyon, and Politika at Pamahalaan. Experts in the field have been invited to give lectures. This year’s AFAP teachers were Perpetua Amorcio and Mary Anne Escoto, both trained for foreign language teaching. DLSU-D College of Liberal Arts Graduate School Director Myrna Torreliza is the In-Country Director, while DLSU-Manila’s Dr. Teresita Fortunato is the Language Coordinator. Professor Emeritus Dr. Teresita Ramos and multi-awarded Filipino poet Dr. Ruth Elynia Mabanglo from the Department of Filipino and Philippine Literature, University of Hawaii-Manoa are the AFAP US Project Directors. The AFAP ends its course on Aug. 2, at Tanghalang Julian Felipe that were attended by the scholars and implementers, DLSU administrators, host families from Cavite, relatives of students, and friends. :: DLSU-D Home | :: Newsette Home |
