De La Salle University-Dasmariñas has become the recipient of the Cesar E.A. Virata collection, an assortment of books and references on local and national history and culture and on the modernization of Cavite.
In a brief ceremony follo-wing the tribute to Amadeo histo-rian Honesto Bayot held at the Zaguan, Museo De La Salle on July 8, Hon. Cesar Virata, Cavite Historical Society president and former prime minister of the Philippine Republic, turned over his collection to DLSU-D. The collection was donated to the school to assist researchers and promote studies on the history and culture of Cavite.
Dr. Estrellita Gruenberg, executive vice president, accepted the donation on behalf of the university. Likewise, Dr. Emmanuel Calairo, Cavite Studies Center director, assured the former prime minister that the institution will look after the latter’s donations.
Hon. Virata, Dr. Gruenberg, Dr. Calairo and Mr. Antolin Gemanil, CHS assistant secretary, signed the deed of donation in the presence of local history supporters from Tanza, Amadeo, Cavite City and members of CHS.
The Virata collection is now housed at the CSC together with the other collections of the center. CSC has a small library with rare books and archival documents. The collections are expected to aid the faculty and students in the conduct of their research and studies.
On the same date and place, CHS convened a meeting where the members voiced their concerns on the present state of some historial sites in Cavite. They discussed historical information which may serve as springboard for publications and activities to be undertaken.

given to Dr. Efren Abueg, Cavite Studies Center writer-in-residence, for his astounding contributions in literature. Said tribute was conceived and made possible without the honoree’s knowledge. Surprised by the twist of the event where he was supposed to give a lecture, Dr. Abueg instead encouraged those present to savor and appreciate arts’ magic and persuaded the young generation to embrace the arts.
A multimedia presentation on several of Dr. Abueg’s works was shown. Some of his works were likewise interpreted and dramatized by some members of the Cavite Young Writers Association to which he is the adviser. Further, CSC Director Dr. Emmanuel Calairo cited the indispensability of Dr. Abueg at the CSC as the latter recognizes the potential of the center as an agent of change in the country.
Among those who shared in hono-ring Dr. Abueg were Dr. Myrna Torreliza, chair, Kagawaran ng Filipino at Panitikan; Dr. Benilda Santos from the Ateneo de Manila University; Ms. Nemie Bermejo of the Palanca Awards; Dr. Vivencio Jose of the University of the Philippines; Ms. Ma. Luisa Moral, a friend; and Ms. Lolita Abueg, his wife. The tribute was a collaboration of Museo De La Salle, CSC, Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo, and Graduate School of Education, Arts and Sciences. |
