Team DLSU-D, Grand Prize in World Food Expo 09
DLSU-D students once again topped Culinary Schools in Manila during the World Food Expo held August 5-8 at the World Trade Center. Our students won the grand prize in the 1st Wilton Cake Decorating Challenge. The Culinary Institute of Aristocrat reaped 2nd place and De La Salle- College of St. Benilde the third. Kayzar Tabing and Sharmaine Joy Canales, together with their coordinators Mr. Rowell Paras and Ms. Mae Casiles, had brought home a Grand Prize winner trophy and Php 40,000.00 cash prize. The event was organized by Gourdo’s and the Pastry Alliance of the Philippines.
DLSU-D reps win in food and beverage expo
The DLSU-D team got the most number of winning entries at the Manila Food and Beverage Exposition (MAFBEX) Young Hotelier Exposition (YHE) held June 17-21, 2009 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. Our students were the champions in the Cake Decorating Competition and the Mock tail Punch Concoction Competition.
This achievement is the first to be gotten by the CIHM for this semester.

HF wins awards in the CEGP Nat’l Press Convention
Heraldo Filipino, the university’s official student publication, once again reaped major awards during the 69th College Editors' Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) National Press Convention held from May 16-20, 2009 in Lucena City. HF has been receiving awards from this annual convention in a row in the past years, but it is in this recent CEGP National Press Convention that HF got the gold.

Outstanding students and orgs awarded in Luntiang Parangal 2009
DLSU-D students and student organizations were once more awarded as Lasallian exemplars of leadership, commitment to excellence, teamwork and service to others in the Luntiang Parangal 2009 held last March 11 at the Ugnayang La Salle. This annual recognition aims at giving credits to the outstanding values and performance of student leaders, artists, writers, athletes, councils, organizations and campus advisers. With the Student Activities Office on the lead, this student awards which started last November 2008 had set guidelines in the nomination and selection of awardees for individual and group awards.
With 300 awardees, Luntiang Parangal 2009 has highlighted the significance of the Lasallian values of faith, zeal and communion manifested in the student awardees’ responsible and admirable acts and conduct.

HF staffers recognized in the 5th Lasallian Scholarum Awards
Two of our campus journalists from Heraldo Filipino have been recognized recently, along with the country’s outstanding print, photo and broadcast journalists.Justine May Papina (Jou41) bagged the Outstanding Feature on Youth and Education in a School Publication award in the 5th Lasallian Scholarum Awards held on August 15, 2008 at the Peninsula Manila. Papina’s article "Dwindle, Dwindle Little Child" bested other entries from various university publications in the country.
On the other hand, Andrew Tadalan’s (Com41) "Cool Comfort" was selected as one of the finalists in the Outstanding Published Photograph on Youth and Education (for newspaper) category, together with photographs taken by mainstream photojournalists.
The Lasallian Scholarum Awards, organized by the Marketing Communication Office of De La Salle University-Manila, is an annual ceremony recognizing outstanding media coverage of Filipino youth and education issues by print, photo, broadcast, and campus journalists.
Other winners of this year’s awards are "Ang Jeep ni Kuya" by Blooey Singson of the Manila Bulletin (Outstanding Published Feature on Youth and Education), "A homeless girl gets little help" by Bullit Marquez of the Associated Press (Outstanding Published Photograph on Youth and Education), "Iskul Ko No. 1" by Sandra Aguinaldo of GMA 7 (Outstanding Televised Feature on Youth and Education) and "Sun’s the Limit Following the Sun" by Ronald Lim of the Manila Bulletin (Outstanding Published Feature on De La Salle University-Manila).
HRM team, grand finalist in the 3rd Goldilocks Intercollegiate Cake Decorating ChallengeHRM students reached the grand finals in the 3rd Goldilocks Intercollegiate Cake Decorating Challenge held last March 1, 2008 at SM Mall of Asia. Out of the many universities and colleges round the nearby regions, DLSU-D’s entrants persisted the same achievement as last year’s entry. HRM students merited medals in the Council of Hospitality Educators of the Philippines Region IV Skills Competition
HRM students won 1st place in the Table Skirting Competition last January 18, 2008 at FAITH, Tanauan City, Batangas This is an annual event organized by the Council of Hospitality Educators of the Philippines(COHREP) Region IV engaged in by universities and colleges in CALABARZON. Micaiah Bunda and John Marron Lim, both 3rd year HRM students, brought home the gold, together with their coaches Ms. Ma. Cecilia Yehlen Jimenez and Mr. Rowell R. Paras. Kristhia Rosarie Amando and Michael Ervin Tiña won 3rd place in the Market Basket Competition. Mel Jayson Sanchez won 5th in the Bed Making Contest.
CLA student made it to the 10th Nat’l Ayala Young Leaders CongressDe La Salle University-Dasmariñas is proud of Klyde Joy Bautista for having made it as official delegate to the 10th National Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC 2008). A junior Broadcast Journalism student, Bautista was exceptionally chosen from among several nominees after a careful selection process. She is one of the 75 delegates from 41 colleges and universities from all over the country who subsisted after the screening process. Led by the Ayala Corporation Chairman Emeritus Jaime Zobel de Ayala, a panel interview involved in by 60 senior executives of the Ayala Group held at Ayala Tower One in Makati City on November 21-23, 2007, became the final phase of the selection procedure.
DLSU-D was lauded for “molding such outstanding youth leaders and for continuing to build foundations of our country for the next generation,’’ Victoria Garchitorena, Ayala Corp. Managing Director writes.
The delegates, who are likely Ayala Young Leaders, will count up to the existing 654 members of the reputable Ayala Young Leaders Alliance (AYLA), the official alumni network of AYLC. The 10th AYLC will take place on February 6 – 8, 2008 at the San Miguel Corporation Management Training Center in Alfonso, Cavite.
MAD Students hit the top 5 in the PANA IMC Competition
Having competed with 12 universities and colleges from the National Capital Region and other areas, DLSU-D Marketing and Advertising students made its way to the top five in the 8th Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) Competition led by the Philippine Association of National Advertisers (PANA) Foundation.
The DLSU-D team will be contending in the finals, together with UP Visayas, Far Eastern University, Miriam College and Assumption College on November 17 at the Centerstage, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. This year’s theme is
“ Pinoy Franchising for the Global Pinoy. ”This annual competition aims to give hands-on marketing communications experience for college students in the areas of Communication Arts, Marketing and Advertising from Level 2 and up PAASCU-accredited colleges and universities in the NCR. Participants conceptualize, design and present an integrated marketing communication strategy for a brand given in the marketing case; this exposure prepares them as future marketing communications professionals. This is DLSU-D's second time to be part of the finalists.
DLSU-D students thrived in the Nat'l Finance Competition final round
The DLSU-D Finance Team prevailed as one of the top five schools in the country’s most esteemed competition in the area of Finance, the 9th Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition concluded last October 15, 2007 at the Auditorium of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Ranking number 5 qualified the team to take part in the CITIBANK Junior Bankers’ Congress slated October 16 to 18 at the Hotel Peninsula Manila. The group composed of: Laila Amon, Edgeline Jovero, John Rex Millora (all BSA31), Jane Mary Bayla and Mary Joy Morales (both BSM41), markedly aced in the Elimination Round by ranking 1st in the Luzon Group (excluding Metro Manila Schools) and made it as #10 in the Nationwide ranking with more than 70 competitors last September 21 at the Meralco Theater, Pasig. They were thoroughly trained by Mr. Don Malabanan (Head Coach), Ms. Eden Cabrera (Coach for Financial Accounting), and Dr. Alice Valerio (Coach for Economics). HRM students earned gold in the National Gourmet Student Summit 2007
DLSU-D HRM Team emerged as first in the Association of Administrators in Hospitality Hotel and Restaurant Management Educational Institutions (AAHRMEI) Gourmet Student Summit ’07, a national competition held at the Trinity University of Asia in Quezon City last August 24 to 25 2007. Coached by Ms. Ma. Cecila Yehlen Jimenez and Mr. Rowell Paras, Kayzar Tabing and Julius Alzate of HRM41 won 1st place in the table skirting artistry with centerpiece, with their entry titled “Antigong Kuwadro.”
DLSU-D posts 91 % passing rate in CPA board exam;
ranks 1st among schools with 10-25 examineesTen (10) out of eleven (11) of DLSU-D’s March 2007 Accountancy graduates successfully hurdled the Certified Public Accountants licensure examination giving the university a passing rate of 91 percent and making it eligible to be ranked number one among Top Performing Schools with 10-25 examinees.

Results were released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) a day after the last day of the examination provided by the Board of Accountancy in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan De Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Legazpi. 2,299 out of 6,213 examinees were able to sweep through. Other top performing schools include UST (with 100 and more examinees), De La Salle Univesity-Manila (with 51-99 examinees), and University of the Philippines- Diliman (with 26-50 examinees ). The national passing rate is 37 percent. Successful examinees shall be accordingly recognized during the oathtaking ceremony scheduled on November 20, 2007, 1 pm at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

Students of the College of International Hospitality Management bagged medals in the 25th Chefs on Parade held last September 27-29, 2007 at the Baguio Country Club. This annual competition is organized by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB), in cooperation with the Hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines (HRAP) and is participated in by universities and colleges in the Cordilleras, Regions 1-3 , NCR and CALABARZON.

More than a hundred students proclaimed exemplars in the Student Awards 2007DLSU-D students’ noble efforts, excellence and leadership were once again recognized in the recent Student Awards 2007 held at the Severino De Las Alas Auditorium last February 28. With this year’s theme: Pagbubunyi sa Galing ng Lasalyano, this annual recognition has been a venue for bestowing credits to deserving students and organizations who have exhibited the values of Faith, Zeal and Communion through their commitment and service extended throughout the school year. Organized by the Office of the Student Services, criteria, guidelines, and nomination were set to determine awardees for individual and group awards. The awards include: Special Citations, Special Awards, Athletes of the Year, Cultural Awards, College Student Council Officer/s of the Year, Major Individual and Group Awards.
HUB students compete with universities in Manila
Human Biology Students ranked third in an Inter-university Biology Quiz Bee held at U.P. Manila last Feb. 28. Representatives who have competed were Chrysnel Monreal (HUB42), Elmer Gabutan (HUB42) and Allan Cornejo (HUB33). DLSU- Manila emerged as champion while Ateneo de Manila University came out as second.
DLSU-D students,champ in an Inter-collegiate Quiz Bee
Science and Liberal Arts Students outstripped 24 schools in the Calabarzon. Coached by Dr. Arnold Fonollera (BSD), Ms. Malyn Pantino (MSD) and Ms. Teresita Unabia (CLA Associate Dean), Elmer Gabutan (HUB42), Eddie Moncada (APM11) and Gerard Atienza (JOU3) got a hold of gold in the PAUTAKAN 2007 Quiz Bee last Feb. 15 at De La Salle- Lipa. This is DLSU-D’s first participation in the annually held Inter-collegiate quiz contest.
ROTC commander named Midshipman of the Year
M/CAPT Alexander Galinato Jr., a third year BSBA Marketing and Advertising Management student, and an ROTC corps commander, was recently awarded a Plaque of Merit for having been adjudged as Naval Reserve Command Midshipman of the Year for 2006. He bested several others from 66 Naval ROTC units all over the Philippines after a thorough screening by the Naval Reserve Command personnel.
Galinato started as a student leader when he enrolled the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)-NSTP. While taking the basic ROTC, he joined the Midshipman/wn Officer Candidate course to hone his ability as a leader of a military organization.
After finishing the Basic Naval ROTC (Military Science 1 and 2), he pursued Military Science 3 at Headquarters Naval Reserve Center National Capital Region (NRC-NCR) at Intramuros Manila for about two months of rigid military training under the supervision of LT Edwin F Carpio PN the course director of MS3 CL02-05. Among all of the participating cadets from other Naval-affiliated schools under the administration of NRC-NCR, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit for graduating as the top student of his class.
He is also a product of Basic University Training in Lasallian Leadership (BUTIL) 2005 and a recipient of the Midshipman Officer of the Year Award given during the Student Awards ceremony on March 1, 2006.

DLSU-D Union of Martial Arts Club wins medals in the National Arnis Encounter 2006The DLSU-UMAC participated in the National Arnis Encounter 2006 held December 8-10, 2006 at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex – Badminton Hall. The event was sponsored by Arnis Philippines, Philippine Olympic Committee, and the National Sports Association.

AB Psyche students join the Psychological Association of the Phils. Quiz Bee
AB Psychology students joined the quiz bee in the 20th Annual Convention of the Psychological Association of the Philippines - Junior Affiliates (PAPJA) held at La Consolacion College, Mendiola, Manila last November 17-18, 2006. The representatives namely: Herwin Rose V. Gesmundo, Ellalaine E. Melo, Gian Kelly L. De Leon and Kristina J. Rojaro ranked 7th place out of 44 I nstitutions. DLSU-D mountaineers at the top of SE Asia
Three members of the DLSU-D Mountaineering Society (DLSU-DMS) took the mountaineering society to new heights when they have scaled the summit of the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, Mt. Kinabalu .
DLSU-DMS Adviser Gerard Natividad and members Joseph Epino and Royce Catimbuhan, together with fellow Filipino mountaineers, participated in the joint friendship climb to Mt. Kinabalu recently.
The 15-member team flew to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia to conquer the top of Southeast Asia 's highest peak at 13,435 feet above sea level. However, the climb wasn't easy. Fatigue and altitude sickness were the hurdles the team had to face during their trek, but that didn't stop them from their quest, recalled Natividad.
The DLSU-DMS shares this successful climb with the whole Lasallian community. “Mountaineering is not just all about climbing mountains; it also entails discipline, ethics, and integrity,” Natividad said. DES student receives int'l scholarshipDevelopment Studies (DES) student Charybel Magbuo received a
one-year scholarship from the International College Student Exchange Program between the Republic of Korea and the ASEAN University Network. As DLSU-D's first international exchange student, Magbuo qualified to study for two consecutive semesters at Daejeon University in any of the courses developed for exchange students that are taught in English.
Before her departure to Daejeon City on March 21, 2006, a testimonial lunch was held where she expressed her excitement to learn about Korean culture and at the same time, share Filipino culture.Proud of being Lasallian, she also acknowledged the assistance of the Academic Linkages Office, University Student Council, College of Liberal Arts , Office of Student Services and the External Linkages Office of De La Salle University-Manila who shared the program information to DLSU-D.
Magbuo's scholarship, which includes a monthly living allowance of $500US, paid tuition and fees, room and board, and a round-trip ticket, is funded by the ASEAN-ROK Future Oriented Cooperation Programs Funds and Daejeon University .

Lasallian wins int’l essay contest, joins Asian youth forum
Development Studies (DES) student Charybel Magbuo is one of the 25 winners of the Asia Pacific Student Essay Competition on Sustainable Development in Asia; consequentially, she joins the Asian Youth Forum which will be held in Kyoto, Japan on March 11-17.
Chosen from more than 600 university students from all over Asia and the Pacific, Magbuo will join the youth forum to discuss and deliberate issues on Asia’s economic growth, environmental conservation, human resource development, industry, and infrastructure. Aside from Magbuo, two other Filipinos will join the youth forum: Ritchie-Anne Guzman of Ateneo de Manila University and Carl Renan Estrellan of Tokyo Institute of Technology. Sponsored by the Asian Development Bank, the youth forum will be held at a public venue open to the general public, including representatives of government, media, international agencies, academia, and civil society.
Magbuo is also DLSU-D’s first international exchange student. Upon receiving a scholarship from the International College Student Exchange Program between the Republic of Korea and the ASEAN University Network, she left the country in March 2006 and studied at Daejeon University in South Korea for two semesters.
She recounts her experience being an exchange student as very rewarding. She learned Hangeul, Korea’s language, and visited places of interest in the country.
“The program instigates the idea that my world is not bounded in the parameters of my country, and it [has] opened the furthered horizon of things unexplored,” she said. “We have been to mountains and fields, fortress and temples, palaces and folk villages...we’ve experienced first hand the beauty of the milieu along with the changing of seasons…we’ve [worn] the famous traditional clothes, Hanbok.”
“The greatest sense of being [in Korea] and to participate in this [exchange] program is about meeting people and friends. We are one big group from different countries, speaking different languages, believing different faiths; we are so different, yet bounded by friendship and mutual concerns,” Magbuo said.
