DLSU-D, regional champ for being eco-friendly
DLSU-D has once again been recognized for its efforts to protect and enrich the environment and its gifts. The university has been heralded Regional Champion in the Search for the Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools 2009 by the Department of Education, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Environmental Management Bureau, Commission on Higher Education and Smart Communications.
This award, given last August 11, was created by DENR to empower the preservation of the country’s natural resources. The governing unit has scrutinized and evaluated universities and schools in the region in these areas: environmental programs, trainings, practices in preserving water and electricity, and leadership assumed and executed in motivating students and teachers toward environmental goals.
DLSU-D has aligned initiatives like ecological waste management, anti-air pollution campaigns, eco-camp, biodiversity conservation research and programs, environmental center, greening activities such as one-million trees and beyond, partnerships and linkages, and many more. It is also important to notice that the verdant surroundings of DLSU-D speak of the university’s endeavors to promote and nurture a clean and rich nature. To add, the university was also recently awarded with the Dark Green Status, the highest distinction given by the Environmental Education Network of the Philippines. Also, in 2006, Haribon Foundation granted DLSU-D the Academic Center of Excellence in Biodiversity Conservation in the Southern Tagalong Region.
The university’s president, Br. Gus Boquer FSC, stated in his response, that it is the university’s duty to take the lead in taking care of the environment. He even emphasized that, “ with or without recognition, we will take care of the environment to keep it green, clean and healthy.”
DLSU-D receives autonomous status and level 3
re-accreditation from CHED and PAASCU
In recognition of the accomplishments, adherence to quality assurance, and commitment to public responsibility and accountability as a higher education provider, we are pleased to inform you that the Commission on Higher Education [CHED] hereby grants the De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, the Autonomous Status...”
This is an excerpt from the letter sent by CHED Chair Emmanuel Angeles to DLSU-D President Br. Gus Boquer FSC on March 17 as it cites the Commission en banc resolution No. 086-2009 granting the University autonomy for a period of five years from March 11, 2009 to March 30, 2014.
DLSU-D is granted autonomy as it satisfies the three major criteria set by CHED: long tradition of integrity and untarnished reputation, commitment to excellence (70 percent), and sustainability and viability of operations (30 percent).
With the Autonomous Status, DLSU-D will enjoy the following benefits: (1) Exemption from the issuance of Special Order for its graduates, (2) Free from regular monitoring and evaluation by CHED, (3) Priority in the grant of subsidies and other financial incentives/assistance from the Commission whenever funds are available, (4) Privilege to determine and prescribe its curricular programs to achieve global competence, (5) Privilege to offer new course(s)/program(s) in the undergraduate and graduate level without securing permit/authority from CHED, except in disciplines that are under moratorium, (6) Privilege to establish branch/es or satellite campus/es without securing government authority from CHED, and (7) Authority to grant Honoris Causa to those deserving, per pertinent provisions of existing CHED issuance on conferment of honorary degrees.
In another development, the colleges of Liberal Arts, Science, Education, Business Administration, including the programs of Accountancy and Computer Science have been granted level 3 re-accreditation for a period of five years valid until May 2014. This accomplishment was conferred by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) after the formal visit on March 9 and 10, 2009.
DLSU-D wins best website in the 8th Philippine Web Awards
The website of DLSU-Dasmarinas was acclaimed as the Best Website in the recent 8th Philippine Web Awards 2005 held last November 25 at the Meralco Theater, Pasig City . Sponsored by Media G8way Corporation, the competition, on its 8th year, is an annual search for the best Filipino-made Website design and development. There were fourteen (14) categories set by the committee; one of which is the Schools category where DLSU-D's website has been classified. The affair was graciously attended by the ITC Director, Engr. Noel M.Genova, together with the ITC Assistant Director, Ms. Venus Rivera, and the Web Unit headed by Ms. Lucila Calairo.
To date, it was DLSU-D's first time to be part of a nationally-recognized competition, yet it was a favorable, fortunate try. From a number of entries, deciding and identifying the winners for each category was rigorously rendered as confirmed by Ms. Delia C. Gutierrez, Media G8way Corp. president and publisher. The finalists for each category had surpassed the six-step process: nominations, validation, screening, semifinals, pre-final, and the finals/winner selection. They were evaluated in respect to content, design, usability, and functionality. The jurors for the semifinals and the finals were a package of the top, well-known and reputable web developers, designers, digital artists/illustrators and web aficionados.
The Awards Night was not merely an evening of recognition but of a commemoration and celebration of the Filipino culture and tradition_ having its theme: Festivals and Fiestas. Aside from the cheers of the participants once their group/company is mentioned, the Filipino spirit was rekindled by the cultural songs and dances and the amazing video presentations, plus the glaring fiesta attire of the performers and some participants.
Besides the Best Web Award, there were also notable awards respectively People's Choice and Hall of Fame. Special awards include Best Fiesta Costume and Best 10-word speech. Prior ending the event, some members of the audience were luckily rewarded with a few IT-gadgets in the raffle. The organizers extended that since the PWA inflicts a seal of excellence in web design and development, Media G8way Corp. shall continue its quest in the years to come.
