SW'09 creates possibilities on good governance for students

"Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan," said Dr. Jose Rizal. A line that may have been used one time too many but it doesn't diminish the fact that it may just as well be true. It is only fitting that for Students' Week '09 (SW'09) celebration held on Sept. 14-18, the Office of Student Services conceptualized and conducted activities with the objective of
opening doors to start the change the students want to see.

With the theme "Creating Possibilities for Good Governance," the event featured a number of seminars related to governance with prominent personalities as guest speaker such as IBON Foundation Executive Director Jaz Lumang-Buncan, Managing Fellow and Pulse Asia President Ronnie Holmes, Lasallian Partners Council Chair Ben Teehankee and Commission on Elections Spokesperson James Jimenez.

This year's celebration was made memorable by the assembly of student leaders with the Brother President, the daily mass for good governance, the seminar of Campus Ministry Office Bernardo Sepeda on Christian Leadership, the Life Enhancement Adjustment Program session for transferees, the launching of Student Welfare and Formation Office's Peer Assistance Program, and the symposium for the 2010 elections.

Two covenants were also made by student leaders in two separate programs - one was a Pledge of Commitment to Truth and Justice which was signed by a number of College Student Councils officers and Yearbook Committee members, and the Covenant for Peaceful, Honest and Orderly Election in DLSU-D which was signed by the three accredited student political parties in the University, SINAG, SENTRO, and Partido Independiente.

Governance, which is the theme of student activities for this school year, is taken from the Lasallian Youth Agenda which identifies education, youth involvement, youth formation, governance and environment preservation as priority areas of young Lasallians in the Philippines.
