National Historical Institute expert delivers lecture

As part of the month-long celebration on Nationalism, the College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences Department, Cavite Studies Center, and Student Admissions Office conducted a lecture on "Building the Filipino Nation through Historical Consciousness, Heritage Education and Nationalism" at the Bulwagang Jose Basa on Sept. 23.

The guest speaker for the lecture, National Historical Institute Publications and Heraldry Division Chief of the Research Celestina Boncan, emphasized on the importance of being aware of one’s historical legacy. She further delved on the various historical sites which serve as reminders of the past and the Filipino heroes whose lives continue to serve as inspiration and guidance in the Filipinos’ journey.

Dr. Boncan also shared the need for these historical landmarks to be discussed and appreciated in the classroom to give opportunity for the students to gain valuable lessons from them and get a glimpse of how rich and colorful the Filipino culture is.

Dr. Boncan reiterated that laws should not be passed to declare national heroes, rather, they should be given such recognition only by the people through their constant admiration for their heroic deeds which benefited the nation. She also announced that there will be an addition to the rays of the sun in the Philippine flag in recognition of the Muslims’ resistance to the Spanish Conquistadores.
Finally, Dr. Boncan showed the respect and love that the Filipinos gave to the late President Corazon Aquino whose life has further strengthened the historical and democratic bonds that tied the Filipinos as a nation.
